Update of epidemic situation until September 30, 2014

Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control sincerely updates the epidemic situation till the end of September 30, 2014.

From the first case detected in 1990 to September 30, 2014, there are 224,223 cases of HIV infection in nationwide (which included 69,617 AIDS cases) and from the first HIV/AIDS case until now 70,734 HIV/AIDS infected persons have died. A number of HIV infected persons have decreased in the last 7 years, however it is still high as there are 12,000-14,000 cases per year. Although a number of new cases are reduced, a total number of HIV infected persons are gradually increased. Today, 80.3% of provinces, wards, towns and 98.9% of urban and suburban districts have announced cases of HIV infected persons. The HIV epidemic in Vietnam includes many forms in nationwide and still gathers mostly in three populations which have high-risk HIV infection behaviors: drug addicts, gays, prostitutes. Nowadays, the sexual partners of  drug addicts are concerned as the new high-risk population, and are added into standby intervention. A number of HIV infected women are reported recently, which is 32.5% of new cases in 2013, it shows the transmission from HIV infected men with high-risk behavior to their sexual partners.
